Children in the Mist

‘Come play with us’ they cry,
The fair ones in the mist.
‘Come play with us
For we are lonely
And far from home.
Our bodies scream
With frozen skin
And boiling blood.
We are lonely here.
Please, please come play with us.’
But close your ears
To the creatures from the mist,
Or else go to them with mercy
Burning in your heart.
They shall remember shame
And let you pass.
For no lies are told,
No harm is meant
By the children in the mist.
Half dead, born to Paradise,
They do understand their strength
And we are nothing to them
But short-lived toys to be wrecked.
Do not meet the pleading gaze
Of an angel from the mist,
They carry Heaven in their eyes.
Cast down to Earth for blistering pride
Yet incapable of our great sins,
They dwell in cursed ignorance
Tearing mortal lives apart
Like those of paper dolls.
They don't mean to
They simply forget
We are mere dust and bone.
